Gear Motors Exciting Yet? Ummm maybe a little.

EFFICIENCY PILOT PROJECT GETS THE GREEN LIGHT. RESULTS SHOW ENERGY CONSUMPTION DOWN 43%.

Newly appointed T3 Systems manager Sham Singh shares his predecessor’s view of gear motors: “Gear motors are not overly exciting – but if you are referring to the highly efficient MOVIGEAR®/DRC, I’m not going to lie, it did pique my interest.

Our line moves 20,000 pieces of baggage across 8 kilometres of conveyor every day; reliability is essential and just as important as our environmental sustainability goals. The MOVIGEAR®/DRC offer the performance and efficiency we are looking for.

“The SEW-EURODRIVE SWAPP (Strengths, Weaknesses, Applications, Product & Post-sales) crew offered us the opportunity to pilot the products available in their EffiDrive® family line-up, specifically the MOVIGEAR®. The SWAPP crew suggested retrofitting (SWAPPing) just one of our conveyor lines to prove it would be well worth the time and investment.

“We carefully monitored both the performance and the energy consumption of the SWAPPed out drives, and based on the 43% energy savings, and their flawless functionality, we opted to implement the IE4 technology into our new baggage system.

“The SWAPP program opened our eyes to the many possibilities available to combine performance and efficiency, an important initiative for Toronto Pearson’s sustainability goals, and one we take very seriously. This solution is perfect because SEW-Eurodrive’s products are designed to seamlessly integrate into our OEM plans, all while giving us the performance, reliability and the high efficiency we need. Yes, we made it SEW again.

TORONTO PEARSON’S ENERGY EFFICIENCY REPORT

“I have had a meter on the drives to measure power consumption. A SA57 drive on an identical belt uses 1.5amp/phase while running, the three MoviGear drives use a combined 1.2 amp/phase (including step down transformer) while running. As you can see below the three MoviGear drives are using significantly less power over the 24 hour test period.”
